Great Apps for your summer trips

There are lots of apps vying for your attention these days, but we've culled a great list of those that can steer you around traffic jams, direct you to the nearest gas station and point out scenic hiking trails.  Even better, all apps are FREE!

Trying to find the best deal by craning your neck to look at the next exit can be exhausting.  Introducing GasBuddy which can direct you to the cheapest gas near your location.  This app relies on user feedback for its database so feel free to report the best gas prices you find on your own as well (available for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone, and Blackberry).

If you have an electric car, check out CarStations for the location of nearly 4,000 charging stations (available for iPhone and Android).

There are many GPS apps to chose from and many of you have them built into your car but don't you want an app that also shows you AAA approved restaurants, campgrounds, gas prices, directions to charging stations and even AAA approved repair shops? AAA's TripTik provides all this and more (available for Android and iPhones)!

The app Waze is available for nearly all phone types and records your location to update the map with traffic jams, speed traps and construction delays, allowing you to find alternate routes around the worst problems.

Are you interested in going hiking this summer? If you are, you can't miss with the Sierra Club Trail Explorer (only available for iPhone).  This app uses the wonderful database at AllTrails.com and GPS to alert you to the nearest scenic path.

Goby (available for Android, iPad and iPhone) lets you decide what you want, such as food, hiking or family fun, and find it nearby! You choose your city, town or region in the U.S. and the app returns options nearby.  You can further sort this list by distance, date or price or you can engage the "fun feed" which will return a list based on your set interests (which it can pull from Facebook). 

You can use TripIt (available for android, BlackBerry, iPhone, iPad or Windows phones) to create an itinerary and share it with your phone's calendar.  You simply forward confirmation emails for hotels, restaurants and entertainment to the app for an easy to work itinerary.

Do you want to find the least expensive place to sleep? Priceline's Negotiator App (available for android, iPad and iPhone) allows you to book last-minute lodging at a generous discount.  Use the "Name Your Own Price" function for savings up to 60%.  It also has "Tonight-Only Deals" that lets you reserve a room on the day you'll be needing it! 

If you're unfortunately in an accident, you'll want to have Roadside Assistance Lite app (Android only) to provide you with an accident checklist and instructions for taking photos of the accident scene and damage.  Most insurance companies have apps that help you submit on-site photos and begin filing your claim right away.  Check with your insurance company to find out if they have an app for that!

 So enjoy this summer vacation and do a little road-tripping! Drive safely, find inexpensive gas and entertainment and even find discounted hotel rooms to bed down in each night, all with the help of Apps!
