Indio is Coachella Valley’s oldest city, named after the Spanish word for “Indian”. Originally a railroad stop in the early 1900s, Indio was incorporated in 1931. Today, the city has become a center for the arts and various conventions, meetings and events. Several festivals are held annually: the Riverside County Fair, the National Date Festival, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Southwest Arts Festival, and the Tamale Festival. The 1996 Historic Mural Project has produced 10 murals that chronicle the city’s history on “old town” buildings.
Golf is a big draw for Indio home owners with 11 golf courses in the city; 7 public and 4 private. A few of these courses are notable in the golf world. The 2nd longest par-3 executive course in the country can be found at the Indio Golf Course. The Landmark Golf Club has repeatedly hosted the Skins Game.
