Palm Springs Single Family Homes
Palm Springs single family homes are the choice of people with larger families, who entertain often and/or who enjoy the space and privacy of their own property. While there are options ranging from small cottage-style homes to rambling estate homes, arguably the "signature" Palm Springs single family home is the mid-century-modern, post-and-beam style first introduced by the Alexander brothers and furthered by such developers as Donald Wexler.
Many Palm Springs single family homes have their roots in the mid-century-modern style popularized by George and Robert Alexander. You can find many Palm Springs homes built between 1947 and 1965 that feature post-and-beam construction, open beamed ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, low pitched roofs and wide eaves. The Alexanders built over 2.200 homes in the Coachella Valley in this time period. Their architectural style has been replicated and merged with other home styles, but the original Palm Springs mid-century-modern home can still be found, with the updates and renovations that make it compatible with today's technology.
Palm Springs Outdoors
For people used to the frigid temperatures of the northern states and most of Canada, the warmth of Palm Springs is a welcome change. In winter, the highs are around 70°F-80°F (21°C-27°C) and the lows rarely drop below 40°F (4°C). In summer, things heat up to well over 100°F (38°C) in the daytime, sometimes breaking past 110°F (43°C). Overnight sees 80°F (27°C) temperatures quite often. A heat lover's paradise, Palm Springs does brisk trade in winter vacations.
The weather has a lot to do with the amount of outdoor activity options in Palm Springs. There are over 125 Palm Springs area golf courses and 9 public golf courses in the immediate area. The city has many options for swimming and hiking. Further out, desert and mountain hiking, horseback riding, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, hiking and canyon tours are some of the activities of choice for the adventurous.
The attractions are not all outdoor: casinos, The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies, the Palm Springs Air Museum, and generous amounts of shopping and dining establishments make for many entertainment opportunities indoors.
Palm Springs is advantageously located for people who like to travel, with the Palm Springs International Airport offering direct flights from major cities in the U.S. and Canada. Since so many people from the northern states and Canada enjoy wintering in Palm Springs homes, the Airport is a very convenient way for them to travel straight to the city. Palm Springs is located 111 miles from Los Angeles, 136 miles from San Francisco and 93 miles from Big Bear Mountain Resorts, a very popular California ski area.
